Does shellac attract flies?
I was working in the garage with shellac all afternoon. About an hour later, the place was filled with flies. I’ve never had this problem in the garage before.

Rotting fruit which will attract some types of flies, produces alcohol as it breaks down, the flies were probably searching for lunch when they got downwind of your garage.
