I think I’m going to buy a Powermatic 54A 6″ jointer at the woodworking show this weekend. I’d be incredibly grateful for any opinions. I was trying to talk myself into the Delta DJ-20 8″, but I don’t think the budget is there……

Although I have not used the 54A, I do own (and use occationally)a mod 54 which was superseeded by the 54A. I also own a Delta DJ-20. There is no comparison between the two machines. The DJ-20 is a commercial shop grade tool which when setup and used correctly will quality results for a long time. The Mod 54 is a much less expensive tool made for the home woodworking market. If setup right it will produce OK results, it is underpowered, lightweight and cheaply built. From my experiance (unless you are moving around to varoius jobsites) bigger, longer bed, more weight, more HP = Better Machine. Unfortunately it also means more money. If you will use the machine every day I suggest getting the DJ-20 or the PM #60A 8" Jointer. It will be more expensive upfront but well worth the extra money.
For the money I don't think you can beat the Powermatic. I bought one six months ago that is the most accurate piece of equipment, right out of the box, that I have ever seen. I have a friend that purchased the Delta 6" (#37-195) at the same time and he is still trying to get parts to make it cut square. He is a retired shop teacher and has worked with this stuff for the last 35 years.
Good Luck
