I bought some orange shellac flakes (the kind from India) from Lee Valley and used Methyl Hydrate, but the color seems to be closer to an olive than orange, and the shellac mix justs look brown in its jar. I really like the color of the old Orange Shellac that Home Hardware used to sell. It WAS orange and thick and perfect. Is this maybe just an bad batch?
FYI… I’ve used Zinnser amber shellac but want a thicker consistency of that color, so that’s why I bought these flakes.
Thanks.

methanol not a good idea
Methyl hydrate is another name for methanol I suggest that you try with denatured alcohol instead which is what Lee Valley recommends.
Denatured alcohol is mostly ethanol with possibly some methanol or other non-consumable to 'denature' it; i.e. make it poisonous to drink.
Pure methanol is very toxic and will even be absorbed through the skin - big time problem with it.
I don't know why your mix turned 'olive'.
