I’m in the market for a radial arm saw, and I just finished reading the article in FW.
So I’m considering buying the 12″ Original Saw and would like to know what someone with some experience with the machine thinks of it.
I’m concerned about how long a saw like this will cut accurately. I know it rides in machined grooves in the arm, and wonder if over time this groove, through wear, gets sloppy.
I’m really impressed with the fact that it crosscuts up to 24″. I can crosscut all of my cabinetry components.
Any info would be greatly appreciated…. thanks, Jeff

The bearings in the roller head are adjustable to make up for the wear. They will probably last longer than you will. Notice all the old DeWalts out there. The Original is based on the DeWalt specs.
If you are new to the saw, consider going to http://www.mrsawdust.com and buying the book. You will learn how to make all of the adjustments as well as how to use the saw safely. In addition it contains a complete guide to using the saw. Used properly it can be a great addition to your workshop.
In my experience most knocks on RASs are based on machines that are not properly adjusted, and involve using them improperly. Even otherwise experienced woodworkers usually have a lot to learn about a RAS. They are not just a table saw on a pole. Using one requires special knowledge.
