I am building some adirandac chairs out of cypress and would like to preserve the natural look of the wood rather than let it ” grey out ” .
i would appreciate any suggestions on a finish that would look good without tooo much annual work .
thank much

I use a mix of tung oil and spar varnish (50/50) on cedar, seems to last about 2 years, just takes a quick sanding then slop on another coat. I'm in Colorado and the uv is very strong, depending on where you live might last longer.
Hi Ben
Thanks for the input .
I will give your mixture a try . I assume that any spar varnish and tung oil will work just fine .

Yes, I've used all types, as long as its exterior varnish. Our local landfill has a recycling area for paint and other materials, and you'd be surprised how much I've been able to scrounge. Good luck with it, and have a happy holiday.
Leif, I have made a lot of cypress out door furniture and the best finish I have found is a translucent stain that you put on.I use a gray hew color (or whatever color you choose) and within a year out in the weather it looks like a natural weather look with no peeling or flaking of the finish as all the stain sinks into the wood. My second choise is a opaque stain which provides more color but does conceal the grain etc. The one advantage is that it never peels and only needs another coat every 3 or 4 years and so far I have experienced no peeling or flaking and my tables and chairs are 9 years old and stay out in the weather all year here in Ohio. Any other finish requires a regular maintenance. Goo Luck with what ever you choose
Hi Mel
Thanks for the input . Is there a particular brand that you have had good luck with ?

Hi Leif, I have used the exterior stain from Sherwin Williams, believe it is called Woodscapes deck stain. Hope this helps.
German Xyledecor is a penetrating finish that works well for me. Unfortunately, it requires coloration for the UV protection, so you can't use the clear kind alone.
