greetings
i’m gonna make some redwood gates for some swell folks & they want ’em sealed, not seasoned.
there’s a product out there called cetol by sikkens.
it’s been recommended by one boat repair/ refinisher to me over epifanes varnish. he’s even recommended valspar poly over epifanes.
what do you know?
what gives?
thanks
alex

Consumer Reports has been testing deck coatings for the past four years. Sikkens Cetol deck products have done better than most but they are very expensive. It is a toned (semi-transparent) rather than clear product.
Valspar, Pettit, International Paint, Woolsey and Epifanes are all excellent products manufactured by companies who specialize in marine coatings. Different folks will disagree which is "better".
Nothing is forever when used outside exposed to the elements and sunshine.
*Redwood cleaning and finishing: A month ago, I finished a redwood deck in a shady location. In this VA climate, it has already turned dark brown. I understand that normal weathering turns redwood silver(ish). Is the brown most likely mold or mildew? If so, is there an easy way to kill the mold and return the wood back to its natural color? Then, what is the best treatment to extend the natural redwook look, and how often will I need to retreat?
