Space in my workshop is at a premium, I don’t have enough room and I can’t expand (until I build that addition!). I received a Dewalt planer for Christmas – got a project I’m going to use it for in the next month. Because of the size of the planer, the size of the workshop and the sawdust that these things make, I’ll be using the planer mostly outside.
My question is: is it OK to store something like a planer long term in an outdoor shed? I build one a couple of years ago & it’s as solid as a house – it would be a better storage home for the planer than my workshop. Is keeping a power tool in an unheated space a bad idea? Hopefully not, I just don’t know where I’d keep it otherwise.
Thanks,
Bob

I don't see why not. I don't have any problems with rust or anything in my storage shed but in another unheated storage area, I have problems with rust on my table saw, but that is because it has a concrete slab under that area. One this to make sure of is that the shed is sealed exceptionally well. I live in the northeast and come late fall the mice like to find something for the winter. They can get into the smallest holes, so make sure everything is sealed up nice and tight.
Thanks - it will help free up space in my workshop and be closer to where I'll use it (outside). Sounds like a win-win.
To get some more posts on this, post it over in the knots forum (last one towards the left, up top) Thats where all the woodworkers hang out and they all post problems about storage and rust, etc all the time.
I've seen the dewalt planers and I think everything should be fine except maybe the blades. Those are probably some type of steel that may get a light rust coat if it sits for a while. Tablesaws will get that light rust coat in a desert.

Yes High Carbon steel rusts easier than low carbon steel. However, High carbon steel is what most non-carbide cutters are made of.Mark
Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk, cut it with an ax.
