Hello all,
I am working on a Padauk slab in hopes of making a gift of it with a finished work desk. Question is, I know Padauk will turn brown quickly if no U.V. blocker is applied in the finish. Does anyone have a recommendation with respect to a U.V. blocker that will starve off the color shift (at least for a few years if not in direct sunlight)?
Thanks
Pat

Thanks for the heads up on the Sherman Wiliams.Kind Regards
The only finishes that contain significant and useful amounts of UV inhibitor are top level marine varnishes. Stay away from consumer brand "marine" finishes. Go to a marine supply store and look for brands like Wolsey, Pettit, Interlux and Epifanes. You must apply 5-6 coats to get a thick enough covering of UV. The finish will have to be lightly sanded periodically and a new coat applied.
Dear Sir, Thanks you for your kind advice. I just ordered some Interlux Goldspar and look forward to seeing who things turn out. I will send a photo. Nice Paduak, 28" wide live sawn board.
Kind Regards,
Patrick
The Goldspar isn't really a spar varnish is a single part polyurethane largely designed for interior uses such as cabin soles where the abrasion resistance of poly is desirable. It does have some UV absorbers, but the Interlux spar varnish intended for full sun exterior "brightwork" is Schooner, a tradtional resin varnish.
