I’m building a new vanity for the kids’ bathroom. I’d like to let the little urchins paint their own mural on it (their bath has a nautical theme) after I basecoat it an appropriate light color. I’d also like the kids to remain basically the same color they are now, which would mean using some sort of washable poster paint, or the like. But then their “masterpiece” won’t be permanent.
So my question is: What kind of clear finish can I apply over their work to seal it from random splashes, without smearing or destroying their work in the process? Or is there another permanent paint they could use that won’t leave them multicolored for weeks?
Thanks in advance for any ideas!!

How about letting them use latex paint. It will wash off. Or you might have to use a spray coat to seal it so you wouldn't brush over their art work and then you could use a more durable topcoat. Enjoyed your characterization of them "staying roughly the same color they are now"!!
*Water-based acrylic artist paint sealed with a can of Jet Spray lacquer.
*PaulAs Gretchen says, a latex paint will be fine. For the top coat I'd brush on a couple coats of waterbase poly. It's a much better finish for the combo kids and a bathroom... it absorbs knocks, nicks and kicks, but won't absorb water, splashes and spots.Good LuckBob
*Thanks for the ideas. I have gone with the water-based acrylic, and it really looks great. I asked the people at the art supply store about polyurethane over the acrylic, and I got dumb stares. But they did recommend the spray lacquer. The problem with lacquer is that I really don't have an appropriately ventilated space indoors to apply it, and it's barely been above freezing outside for weeks. I'll try the poly first on a test piece to see if it goes over the paint well - but I worry about it yellowing over time.
*The water based poly won't yellow.
