I am building a set of covers for hydronic baseboard heaters for a friend’s remodeling prject. They are made of poplar/soft maple and will be painted white. I need to know what type of primer/paint to use that will give me the best heat/moisture protection (one of these will be going in a bathroom).

There is an article in the newest FWW discussing the use of CPES as a primer sealer, in this case for use under bright finishes. This product has been used for some years by a significant number of boaters who suggest that it helps to both seal wood and "glue" the finish to it. I have read other articles re the use of epoxy resin as a sealer as well. The issue, in many, if not most cases, is moisture gets into the wood, and then migrates to the surface, causing the finish to loose its grip. Don't forget to cover ALL the surfaces.
