I am building an unconventional cabinet. It looks like several boxes of various sizes and depths all stacked up together without doors. It is made of plywood veneered in birdseye maple. I want to finish the faces bright and paint the plywood edges. I don’t mind seeing the core veneers.
My question is how to finish without having the paint bleed into the veneer. I have considered pre finishing the veneered slab edges before assembly but fear it will be impossible to make all the edges even. I would prefer to finish after assembly and flushing up various edges, corners etc.
Any thoughts? Stain and shellac the whole thing then masking tape and paint the edges?

Not going over the edge . . .
. . . is sort of like coloring within the lines . . . with water colors. ;-)
I'd suggest sealing the edges with dewaxed shellac. The edges of ply tend to soak up finishes, though, so it may take several coats. If you want smooth edges, you may also need to use a filler that will dry hard and can be sanded. I would also finish the outside surfaces prior to painting the edges.
