I am renovating an old porch on my house in northern Maine and planned to use pressure treated lumber for much of this (if you have another idea let me know). The wood has a lot of water content. I am wondering how I know when it is ready to paint and what should I use to paint pressure treated lumber – what kind of primer, what kind of paint? Thanks

I live in southern Virginia and have had succes painting treated lumber with solid deck stains and also with exterior latex paint. Both seem to work well and have lasted for a number of years with no problem. I wait until the wood has air dried and appears to be dry but do not actually measure it with a moisture meter.
To everyone - thanks for your help

Agree with halfact. Let it dry sufficiently before you paint it. Butt the floor as it will shrink and give you drainage spacing by way of mother nature. If you don't want any spacing on a covered porch, let it dry before you add the floor because with it being as wet as described; it will shrink.
Porch and Floor gets the call at my house, especially on the trafficked floor portion. You'll have to re-paint every 3 or 4 years regardless. More often on the floor if it receives heavy traffic.
Good luck...

I have had good results by waiting until it seems dry, maybe a few weeks. Prime it first with BM fresh start and they put what you want on top of that. I use latex.
