Hi
I am building paint grade doors. Poplar rails and stiles and 1/4 inch mdf panels. What is the painting process. I am trying to get a modern look. A Sort of blue/charcoal color with a semi gloss finish. What do I need in the way of a spay gun? Do I need to add a dryer to my compressor? What type of sealer? and what type of topcoat.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Roger

I'm not gonna even try to recommend paint brands because what I use is certainly not what's available for you. But I can tell you in general terms - we paint these kind of doors all the time with water-borne lacquer. No matter what the final color, the first coat is always a white base coat. We then switch to base coats that have been specially tinted to the final shade, often 2 or 3 coats as needed to get it perfect. The sanding gets lighter and lighter between coats, but we never need to go finer than 320 grit. Then finally a topcoat of clear water-borne lacquer in whatever gloss is required. Most of our painted doors get a 10% gloss, but 20% is also common. At 40% gloss you're already quite shiny and facing very demanding conditions to get it right. We use Sata spray guns, and yes, an air dryer is a very good thing to have but if this is a one-time job, you can certainly get by using water-borne without it.
