I have varnished Golden Oak kitchen cabinets and want to finish them in a darker color. Paint remover is too tedious and won’t work on all the areas to apply a stain so am thinking of spraypainting them in a dark wood color and applying an aged look glaze. I still want them to appear as a “wood stained” finish to some degree.
Any tips on how to accomplish this?

Try a gel stain, it would achieve the same effect in less time. Then topcoat with a poly.
Test an inside area with Minwax Polyshades or a similar product from another manufacturer. It's a polyurethane tinted with any of various shades of stain. Since it is tinted, every coat makes it darker, so you have to put the same number of coats on the whole project.
