Parallelogram jointer vs. standard
Howdy all!
Hey i’m looking at buying a griz or shopfox 8″ jointer to upgrade my last griz jointer. Maybe this has already been discussed, but I see now they have a standard “ways type” 8″ jointer w/ 2hp and for not much more $, a parallelagram style jointer @ 3 hp. Is this something that is a big improvement? I’ve seen older style jointers that have had wings sag, maybe the parallelagram jointer can be adjusted to make up for this problem? Better support? Looks like it would be better to me. I notice that the bigger jointers, 12″, 16″, seem to be parall. type jointers, so is this considered better? One other thing. The 2 hp jointer (standard) is a 2 belt drive and the 3 hp jointer (parall.) is a single belt drive. 2 sounds better, but i’ve currently got 1 1/2hp single belt and never bogged it down. Whats the word on the street about this design?
Thanks for any help,
kelvin

Get the parallelogram type jointer if you can. Adjustments are superior. I work with the Delta DJ20, and to adjust both beds, I simply turn the eccentric collars (4 per bed), then lock it down with the set screws. Forget about the shims...number of belts, IMHO, is irrelevant.
did you look at the powermatic 8" jointer? I don't own one , i know people who do and they think it a great machine. Check out the unit on powermatic.com. good luck.
