I promised a friend some small monitor wedges out of plywood for his home studio. And I’ve been asked to design/quote on a “road” case (like Anvil or similar) for my company’s growing trade show exhibit. I suspect it’s cheaper to buy and adapt than to have me build a custom case. None-the-less, I’m willing to do the exercise just for my own satisfaction.
I’m looking for the metal corners and edges as well as the recessed latches and grab handles. Can i trust the hardware offered by Rockler/Woodcraft/Woodworker Supply, etc.?
Who can provide more durable, “roadworthy” hardware?
Maybe I’m not looking in the right places with the right keywords, but a Google search turned up nothing in the way of discrete hardware. I only found finished goods…at prices well below what I could probably build this for!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tony... try a google search for 'trunk repair parts'. Long ago a local locksmith also did repairs on camp trunks. He had quite a selection of various corner pieces and locks..Also try 'luggage repair'. You will probably find the stuff you need in either of these two areas.

Try TCH at <tchweb.com> They have everything you're looking for.
Last year I helped build some road case for my church. We ordered all the hardware from TCH and were pleased with the service.
Good luck with your cases!
Rick
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been looking for this place since long before there was an internet.
That's it! It's the center of the world for the do-it-yourself roadie!
Thanks for the tip-in, Rick. I would have eventually stumbled across the site after sifting through a nearly endless google search...even a blind squirrel gets an occasional nut. You just made things much easier. Hopefully I can pay it forward and do the same for you or someone else in the future.

Tony,
I think you may find some of the Lee Valley hardware to be acceptable. Don't buy the cheapest stuff and you'll find the quality is fine.

Tony, take a look here in VanDyke's on-line catalog:

Hi Tony,
I use Penn Industries, a US-based manufacturer.
Here's their website and order page
As well, here's a directory of manufacturers related to all things music industry
Cheers, eddie
Steve -- Lee Valley was actually my first thought. Their hardware catalog is more comprehensive than any other. I was concerned that I might not find everything I needed, and that their componants might not withstand the rigors of weekly shipments, the indifference of trade labor and careless drayage!
ForestGirl -- I'll check VanDyke's, but I think the same may be true for their products...decorative and dependable, but not truly durable.
Eddie (down under by dere) -- Thanks for the link to Penn. Like TCH, I think I'm more likely to find what I need from them. They even have those trapezoidal corners for my friend's monitor wedges!

I think what you have described at looking for is known as campaign hardware - at least that is how it is described in the Lee Valley catalogue. The key element is that when handles are not being used for lifting they are flush with the side of the piece. Of course this requires that the case sides be thick enough (or reinforced arround the handle) that there is sufficient residual strength once the recess has been cut.
You might also try Parts Express.

SawdustSteve and ian -- a search for "campaign hardware" and "luggage repair" resulted in some valuable information! Thanks!
markstu -- Thanks! That's another great source for the products I need.
Thanks everyone for your quick replies!
