I am trying to decide where I should locate the mid rail for some doors I am working on. The four way match panel is only propped up to give a background. That panel was my first trial with a crotch veneer and did not turn out as good as I want (it will become a table someday). The veneered panels are now being fabbed so the four way match is centered in the larger opening and the remainder is put in the other. I am leaning towards sm3, but some friends think the lower rail is the better option.
If anyone is curious why the tenons are not cherry, the rails/stiles are stave core and the core is a glulam.
Thanks

sm2 gets my vote.
thks for the vote
As a general rule of thumb, the mid-rail is located where the lock is going to be mounted--roughly 36" above finished floor for residential doors.
I should have mentioned I am going for the Arts and Crafts style. Many of the examples in Robert Langs book show the rail near the top. I dont really want to bore out my tenon with the door hardware and think having the mid rail offset from the door knob is odd.
Thanks
Since you're not truly copying a particular pattern, style really boils down to personal preference. Door#2 get my vote.
Hmm, so you cannot tell me what I like? But we know eachother so well. Ha!hA! I suppose it was kind of a silly Q, but then again we all have those days when the brain is in first gear. Just looking for preferences. Thanks.
Always glad to share an opinion . . .
divide everything by 1.6 and you'll get great results.
