I have patched in some fir floors where I have made a small addition to the dinning room. I got some used flooring that very close in color and size to the old. Where the stuff meets up etc. needs to be sanded and refinished.
The area is ft by ft approx.
What I want to do is match in the new floor to the old. I am not looking to it be perfect. In 5 or 6 years we will replace all the floors, when the grandkids are older.
I have small ridges where the new meets the old, where I have small gaps I plan on using wood putty to fill.
Since it a small area will I be ok to use a belt sander? If so what grit would the Finnish sanding be?
What do I use to refinish the wood? Is it a stain that is put down first, to color the fir? What do I seal it with? Is there a way to feather it into the old?

It's best to remove the affected parts of the old flooring, and cut a mating 45* to join new and old pieces, then re-install.
For finish, test on scrap first, go from there.
