Hi,
A kitchens worth of patching, client want to go with Euro hidden hinges in lieu of the exposed hinges in place. We’re doing a complete clean and color change sop not oo big of a deal but on inspection I have a couple questions.
1st this is an oak kitchen, classic Golden Oak PU finish that’s in good condition. #6 screw holes are a bit ragged. I’m just scuffing the finish and applying a PU based gel stain and going towards a cherry color so darker. The oak is typical un matched and quite porous. Varies from light to dark in any one or 2 places. Some holes in early wood some late…
I’m considering the foloowing approach:
Drill out the screw holes clean, to remove that jagged edge with always get much darker. I then need advise on a filler that will be light enough for me to use some Japan colors to paint some grain on and change the shape from pure round. Then I’ll seal with a golden oak PU (I already have nailed that color down) and lightly sand all proceed as if no holes patched.
How does that sound?
Any advise that could make it better?
Thanks,
Bro. Luke

I suggest you fill with anything you like, but repair the surface with some similar veneer. Don't worry about the colour too much, but try to match the grain some.
Scrape flat and apply your stain. Seal the panels and then use powdered oxides and whatever sealer you used as a medium for the oxides to touch up the areas that need it. Shellac works well for this. Look carefully at the area needing touch up. You will need to mix up several colours and even reproduce some grain. Once done, give the panels the final coat of finish.
The secret to touch up is not to do more than you need to. Good luck. JL
