Hi All,
A friend of mine had his father pass away last week and while not a “woodworker” he had a bench and some nice tools. They were cleaning out the garage and found an unused Pattern Makers Vise. It has no instructions on how to mount it…or what brand it is. My friend asked me if I wanted it and said I did…so I now have a Pattern Makers Vise to install. Can someone point me to a web site they know of that tells how to install a Pattern Makers Vise? All I’ve heard about them before is that they are nice vises to have, but can be a headache to install.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!!

Is it an Emmert? If so, you've got a gem. Check out "The Wookbench Book" by Scott Landis, published by Taunton. He goes into depth on vise mounting. Can you post a picture of it? I bet someone here would recognize it if you did.

Nice find! Landis does cover it, and the site Rick recommended is excellent. If it is an Emmert, there are 2 ways to install it. One is to leave both the front and rear jaws proud of the front of the bench, which saves your bench a bit. The other is to mount it with the rear jaw flush, or 1/8" out, from the edge, which is what I did. A pix is attached. Note that it is the smaller one, the No. 2.
With the flush mount, you can more easily grip a board to edge plane, etc. I love mine, but I also miss the rapid action one I removed. I could work it with no hands; just a hip shove and a knee turn of the handle.
