I was given a paulownia tree last year. I think it looks like a weed (19 large leaves). Is this what it is supposed to look? Is the lumber from it good for anything? It is growing at the rate of 1’6″ per month.

Duggie, paulownia's leaves are huge, and it grows almost as fast as bamboo...so, it sounds like what you have really is paulownia.
This species is native to the Orient and it is a much prized cabinet wood in both China and Japan. It produces a ring-porous wood, resembling ash in appearance, except it has a beautiful light tan color and it's exceptionally soft and easy to work. It's very similar to our native catalpa.
