I want to make a true oval for an existing pedestal base. The base is 22″ square and the oval top needs to be either 60 or 66″ l x 44″w. Will this be stable enough and is there a formula to know the proper size base to a give top size?
Thank you for any help you can offer.

Love the screen name. I guess that makes me manwithatruck...
I drafted up a quick sketch of the oval tabletop and square base, using the dimensions you supplied just to see what it looked like. Below is a scaled down sketch.

Are these dimensions stable?
From the looks of it, I'm a little skeptical of its stability from end to end. The 22-in. base is only 1/3 the length of the table, which might not provide enough footprint to handle the weight of an adult leaning on the table (that's me by the end of a big meal).
I wasn't able to find an equation to follow, it is just a judgment call from looking at the sketch. For a final answer, you may have to mock it up using your existing base and a sheet of plywood.
ANYONE ELSE CARE TO COMMENT?
Also, check out this article on table design. It doesn't address your specific question but it has a lot of great tips.
