Percentage Galleries and home stores take for your work?
I’m a fellow woodworker here in Boston, Ma.
I’ve recently been approached by a former client who is interested in partnering up to open a hand made home goods store.
Though I would feature my own furniture, I plan to feature other local furniture makers and crafts people.
My question is, How much have galleries/stores taken for your pieces?
My guesstimation, is that we would take 40% of all sales, allowing the artist to set the price.
Of course we provide press, exposure and marketing. I’m thinking incetive for working with us, would be to set a scale. Say a an artist does a certain amount of sales within a business year through our store, we would lower the comission for works by that artist the following year ect. I’m think win, win. So I hope.
We really want to invest in our local economy and hope we would create a voice for many artists that are to busy building and working other jobs to sell their work at the rate that is possible.
Any thoughts, info or advice is welcome. Thanks for the time.

Fifty percent is more common for gift items, say under a hundred dollars. For expensive items it is reasonable to take a lower percentage. You might be at twenty percent or less on a ten thousand dollar case peice.
However, if the items are on consignment and fully returnable, you have a lot more flexibility.
Items that turnover quickly add a lot to your profitability. An item that turns over six times a year at 30% is more profitable than one that turns three times a year at 50%.
You may want to have some sort of time limit on how long you'll keep unsold peices. And an agreement of who is responsible for damage to and theft of items.
And letting artists set the retail price should be subject to your input.
Been recently dealing with a gallery in Washington state. For consigned items, the gallery takes 50% (they recently increased it from 45%). For custom pieces, where the client is refered to the artist by the gallery, they take 35%. This is independent of item cost.

I have been a member of a succesful coop for 7 years. We take 40% of sales from consignees. Members pay 20% of sales. However, members are required to be clerk several days a month. Members also do tasks such as display, marketing, and finance.
