The abrasive strips on my Performax 16-32 tend to fail in the tapers long before the abrasive is worn out. Does anyone have a method for repairing them? At $ 8 per, I’d like to get a little more mileage out of the strips. Thanks.

I have the same sander. I always find that I get burn marks (rings) way before anything else goes wrong. But I have been buying the paper from a different supplier and have to cut them from a single roll. Takes a little time, but you get twice the strips for the buc.

I have the same sander. After installing the strip, I go back to both ends and pull the tab tight, to be sure it is flat, and have had not problems with excess wear at the ends.
The glue and sap burns that seem to destroy a sheet can be "washed" off. Someone suggested simple green, which I use (but I haven't tried others). When several belts are ready to wash, I spray, let it sit a few minutes, scrub with an old fashioned scrub brush, rinse, and lay flat on the deck to dry. Some belts are well behaved, and others love to curl tightly, but a brick on each end will keep the unruly belts flat enough.
Sometimes most of the "burn" can be cracked off by flexing the belt (5 minutes of therapy in the sitting position) before setting the belt aside for washing.
