I’m interested in purchasing a performax sander to be used for preperation of segments for segment turning. How short can the wood piece be for uniform sanding? Is there scalping like a planer? Can I dial in a thickness to within 0.005 inches and hold that demension from end to end?

woodcraft sells performax and gives some specs on it. Performax also now has a benchtop sander.

Jerry,
Before making most purchases, I go to the manufacturer's website and download the manual for the item. Here's the link to the Performax 16-32 manual:

If you want to look at other models, use this link:

I have the 16-32 and have been satisfied with it so far. Use scrap wood for the first runs with it. It took a few minutes of operation for mine to 'settle in' and hold the drum in position correctly. I haven't had to readjust the tilt on it for several hours of operation now. A friend dropped by to run some pieces for a segmented turning and was very pleased with the results. He's now going to buy a 16-32.
