What’s the difference between Peruvian and Honduran mahogany? I’m building outdoor chairs and plan to use a clear oil finish. Will they weather differently/appreciably?
In a related note, any suggestions on lumber sources in the DC area?
Thanks!

Colonial Hardwoods (703) 451-9217 in Springfield, Va. They supply wood from around the world and can answer any mahogany question you have. They will probably show you the two pieces while they are explaining the differences.
Good Luck,

Ken, I'd be a little leary of that "Peruvian" mahogany...It could be just about anything. Honduras mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) ranges well beyond Honduras. In fact, in recent years most of it has been exported from Brazil, but the trade usually makes it clear that what they are selling is the real McCoy by calling it "genuine" mahogany. When you hear adjectives like; "Philippine", "Peruvian", or "Slobovian", it's time to duck the punch. They're probably trying to sell you a genuine counterfeit. Ask them for the botanical name of what they are selling. There's no wiggle room in botanical names.
