We have a cone shaped hand powered food mill that operates on the same principle as a mortar and pestle – food – tomatoes, for example – is put in the cone shaped, perforated metal “mortar” and ground up by rotary hand motion of a hardwood “pestle”.
Problem is the pestle has gone missing and we’re trying to make a replacement. It”s a simple conical turning about 12 inches long with a max diameter of 3 1/2 inchs.
Two questions
(1) Anyone have recomendatioins for choice of wood? Both hard maple and apple have been suggested
(2) Anyone have a good source of the wood? We’re located in southwest Connecticut – about 40 miles from New York city or 25 miles from FW heqdquarters in Newtown. Anything available via internet?
Any information would be most appreciated.
