Darrell,
I have been looking for information on Southern Yellow Pine. I have read and heard reference to this wood. However, I have not had much luck getting information about this species. It must go by another name. Can you enlighten me?
Also, how available is Cyprus? Being from North Western Canada I am interested in material that is not available here. This area has very limited species to choose from. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
Regards
Ken

Hi Ken,
I am not that knowledgeable on Southern Yellow Pine but according to "World Woods in Color" by William A Lincoln different names for Southern Yellow Pine are:
As far as the availability of Cyprus - sorry I don't know on this one - I am in Seattle and don't recall seeing it available here.

Thanks for the info. Now I have several a.k.a.'s to watch for. I appreaciate your help.
Souther Yellow Pine (SYP) can be from any number of species that (theoretically) are harvested in the southeast U.S. It's a lumber dealer kind of name.
Cyprus I think maybe you're looking for cypress (baldcypress, Taxodium distichum) which we harvest in the great Louisiana swamp of the Atchafalaya River Basin. This is what I make 90 per cent of my furniture with. It is a beautiful wood, but difficult to work because of gnarly grain and extreme variations in hardness, probably from as hard as oak to as soft as basswood in the same board sometimes.
To order it just search the net. There are lots of suppliers out there. The price ranges from $4 to $16 / bf. Just be sure you get "sinker" or old growth, not recently logged trees. The lumber from the new trees is very poor quality.
Hope this helps.
Ernie
