Hello Brennan.
I am currently doing a project with pine and I just stained some yesterday. The result was good even if people say Pine is hard to stain.
I used Saman waterbased stain. I did not use a pre-stain product, I simply followed some advice to use a wet sponge to make the wood absorb water before applying the stain... this prevents the wood from drinking the stain and havind uneven spots.
This is my first stain job so I cannot compare but it came out nice. I diluted the stain 1:1 because I find Saman product covers the grain too much.
Good luck on your project and let us know how it went ;)
