Plan details seem to be missing from “Bookcase Makes Waves” by C Michael Vogt
While laying out plans for the “Bookcase Makes Waves” by C Michael Vogt in the book “In the Craftsman Style” I noticed that the diagram for the curvy shelves gives a radius for the curves (21 and 3/8), but neglects to mention where to center the circles. I’m pretty sure the narrowest part of the shelf should be about 1/4 of the along the shelf, but it would be helpful if I knew how narrow the narrowest part of the shelf was supposed to be (and yes, as one of my friends put it, I’m still at the recipe stage).
I’ve thought about simply skipping the curves, but my customer (age 3) is rather insistent that he wants a bookcase with “bumps”.
Thanks,

I don't have that book so I can't say for sure but I think you could eyeball it and be just fine. It doesn't appear from what I can see that there's anything critical about the radius of the arcs nor about their exact locations. I'd make it symmetrical but that would really be the only concern. I did work out locations for the centers of the arcs on the top after assuming the arcs start at 3" in from the ends. If the 3" distance is not correct, then the 13-3/32 in. isn't correct either.
A large version of the images is here: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5045/5271309760_3b61c09358_b.jpg
In practice I would bend a thin, flexible batten to the desired radius and tie it with a piece of string so it holds the curve. I'd trace out the center arc first and then place the other two arcs so they are tangent to the center arc and intersect the point where the arcs run off the board at the ends. The narrow part of the board will end up where ever it does but it will be right.
