Any suggestions on plans for an indoor bench to be used in back entry hall and in master closet. Looking for a traditional look that we will place cushions on top of. Size probably 4-6 feet wide. Simple sitting bench to take rest while taking shoes off etc.,
Thx

Kev,
Years ago I bought a used church pew for this purpose. Recently I took it apart and it's a simple yet strong design. The ends are double 4/4 oak panels dado and groved to accept the seat and back, respectively. The seat and back are 4/4 stock(pine or fir or poplar) with bullnose on the edge. You can grove the seat into the back for extra srength. There is some shaping to the seat but it is quite minor; the low spot being about 1/4" 2/3rds. of the way back from the front.
BG...very interesting solution. Quick question though...how were the double 4/4 panels connected?
Kev,
The best I can tell the panels of 4/4 oak are glued together..so that each end is about 2" thick. The inside of the panel is then dadoed and groved about an 1" in depth. I suspect the depth of the panel is important to its stability, altough, at the base of the panel is a sled type foot that extens beyond the base on the back side which will help with the tipsy too.
I'm sure there are a number of churches near you that have similar seats.
Kev,
I saw your message on "the indoor bench". I thought that I might ask for more info. (ideas) on this.
I am looking to build a bench that I could put in my front entry which would allow people to sit on while removing thier shoes. Also this piece of furniture would have a few drawers, a mirror and hooks to hang umbrellas etc....
The problem that I have run into is all the pre-made plans are to RUSTIC for my taste! I am looking for a more modern style.
If you can shed some light on this I would be greatful....
