I’m guessing this has been covered before, so pardon my ignorance. I’m filling out my hand plane collection. I’ve been buying them more or less as I need them. This is a tool collection for making things out of wood, not a tool collection to put on display.
Having said that, from small to large, I have a Stanley 12-975 (new version of the old #75) Bull Nose Rabbet Plane, Stanley 60 1/2 Block Plane, a Record #4 bench plane, I’m waiting for delivery of a new Veritas Low Angle Jack plane, and I’m going to pick up a auction Stanley/Bailey or Millers Falls 22″ jointer plane in the next week or so. The Veritas Jack plane is 15″ long, so it seems to me I have fair coverage of planes from small to large. Seems adequate to me for now, or do you think I need something between the #4 and the Jack plane? or what?
Yes, I’d love to have a nice Record 311 Rabbet plane or similar, but can’t afford it for now….chisels will have to suffice.
Thanks…Jeff

Yep- that is not a bad herd. My thoughts are that a heavyish smoother is missing there. I use my #51/2 a lot, and hardly ever touch a #4. Ditto for #51/2. Both Lie Nielsen and Veritas do a wide smoother i.e with 23/8ths blade. That is if you are not to introduce any exotic stock there.Or you could get an older Stanley 41/2.There is also the 50 degree bed option-depends on what sort of work you do.
How about that?
Looks like a real good start to me.
One thing I use a great deal that I don't see on your list is a No. 78 filletster. Having the fence and depth gage makes running long rabbets like on the back of casework quick and simple.
They don't cost an arm and a leg either. Besides Stanley, Millers Falls, Sargent, Record and Now Anant have all made them.

I tend to agree with Philip about a heavier smoother. I like my LN 4 1/2 with the York pitch. But, you could always wait and see... if you don't use a lot of figured wood, you may not miss it. You might also consider a cabinet scraper if you don't already have one.

I just mail ordered in a new 4.5 LN this week and used it for the first time today with excellent results. Very smooth cut and fast with a lot of weight behind it.

On the down side, they (LN) are habit forming...Glaucon
