I want to identify the type of planes I have, i.e. jack, smoothing. One is a Stanley Handyman, the other is a Stanley #5.

The #5 is a Jack plane useful for general carpentry mostly. It can also be used somewhat for smoothing and somewhat for jointing (shorter boards) depending on how it is tuned. THe Handyman I believe came is several sizes and what it was intended for would be dependant on that. IE: how long is it? My .02
