Hello
I usually prepare my stock with Stanley 5 and Stanley 4 1/2. After that smoothing plane Stanley 4 is used.
The problem that I can is that I am not able to archieve wide shavings. It seems that my stock is not flat enough or the planes are not cathing the surface enough. Either way, the shavings made be fine (the plane irons are sharpered well, stropped before start) but they are maybe 1-1.5 inch wide, even with 4 1/2 plane.
Any ideas how to correct this?
Thanks.

How much camber do you have on the plane irons?
If you have an appreciable amount (i.e. more than just dubbing the corners to avoid plane tracks), the thinner the cut, the more likely you're going to take a shaving less than the full width of the iron, because of how much is actually protruding.
I try to keep the camber as small es possible. When I sharpen the blades I do for example 20 runs "straight" and maybe 5-10 runs where I press one side of the iron tip, so I can take out more material on both sides. That is how I create cambers on my irons. It is really not that much.
Maybe I can try sharpening one iron just "straigh" and see how it performs e.g. if I get any tracks at all.
Put a square across your plane iron. If you are taking a shaving 1-3 thousandths thick, the two corners only need to be down by that much, and they won't cut.
You are using a motorized stropping wheel, right? You could easily be taking off too much.
Prepare a blade for the 4-1/2. Straight across, no camber. Stop at 8,000 grit. No stopping. See what kind of shavings you get.
Thanks. I think this is how the problem should be solved. I prepared the blade and left almost no camber on the edges. The shave width increased a lot and is now almost the width of the iron itself.
I guess I overdid the camber on both edges.
No I do not use motorized stropping wheel, not happy with the durability of the edge. I got back to hand stropping with green compound.
