A buddy just gave me an old (15 -20 years plus) Sears 12 inch Portable Planer still in the box. How do I tune this up, get the knives in shape and plane a few boards? Any suggestions on web sites or articles available on how to tune portable planers?

larrywoods,
Open box take, out planer, run test board thru planer to see what if anything it needs..
If it needs sharpening check to see if the blades can be inverted, in which case you remove the blades and reinstall them upside down.. See if they are disposable or if they should be resharpened..
If they need to be resharpened, take them to the guy who sharpens your saw blades, For advanced woodworkers, you can bring them to a printers supply service, printers need the same kind of blades and actaully sharpen them to a finer degree than wood workers (cheaper)
Make saw dust!
