Stanley's arbitrary labeling scheme. There is a logic to it, sorta....
1-8 are bench planes; 9 is the mitre plane; 9-1/2 is the std angle block plane; 20s are wooden bodied "transitional" planes; 60s are generally (low angle) block planes; etc.
