Hi,
I am in the middle of making a shaker clock (using walnut.. 1st handtool only attempt) and I am looking for a way to habd cut the same profile made by a router roundover bit.. not a bull-nose… more like a quarter round with a little bit of vertical profile at the top.
I would like some ideas from someone who as done this before. Here are some of the possibilities but I wasn’t sure if these would work:
1. Standard or custom ground cutter on a combination plane (#45 or #50)
2. Wooden hollows or rounds (I forget which one is which) plane?
3. Quarter round moulding plane (if they exist.. and how would i find a good one?)
Any suggestions?

Rob,
The 45 and 50 didn't come with quarter round blades (the 55 does) but that's not to say you couldn't make one. Yes you could use a hollow molding plane to shape a Q/R and yes there are molding planes that cut Q/Rs.
But you may be making this harder than it needs to be. For a clock your only talking about a couple of lineal feet of molding and the Q/R is about as simple as it comes. You could shape it with a block plane or spokeshave. Clean it up with a card scraper or some sandpaper and your good to go.

Another way to make a molded shape is with a scratch stock. You can file the shape into the end or edge of an inexpensive card scraper, attach a fence or guide. Two strips of wood bolted together is simple enough to make, glue a strip of 400 sandpaper to the wood to prevent slipping. This will only work with open grained hardwoods, not with pine, cedar, poplar and other closed grain softwoods. It could be used as a template for hand shaping these species.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Rob ,
For as little as you need , I would probably use a hand held block plane .
If is a round over profile that looks like a quarter round it just may be made with a bull nose bit , just the dimension of the molding makes it look different .
I have done a lot of restoration work on older pieces and have made many profiles this way , you have to get tricky some times , think out of the box .
good luck dusty
