Dan,
Wow!..Breaking!?...sounds extremely dangerous. How do they break, that is to say, do they have nicks or cracks or do they break into pieces? First thing I would check is to make sure all the bolts that hold the blades in place are TIGHT. Perhaps a little more information to the posting board and more of us will be able to help.

one blade was actually broken in three pieces. can they be tightened too much. have had this planer for about four years and never experianced this problem before. thanks for your input
I'd be calling Delta ASAP, this could be incredibly dangerous.
Get it to a Delta Repair shop and have it checked out. It sounds like you have already removed the broken blade, (something I would have done too). Unfortunately, its going to be tough to figure out if was installed wrong or not. If the blade itself is defective it will be fairly easy to see.
In any case and at this point, I would let a repair shop check it, install new blades and test it. Theres absolutely no sense in endangering yourself any further.Steve - in Northern California
To maintain an edge these blades are very hard and with hard goes brittle. The blades should have been tempered in the factory before final sharping this is to ease away some of the brittleness. If this process is missed then the blade will snap very easily. Check the blade housing is clean and smooth, if the blade is clamped down over dirt or a wood chip it could break.
