Just when you think you can go a month without buying another tool, one of my most used is finally biting the dust. I use a Ryobi 12″ planer, got about 10yrs out of it already replaced the drive gear once, now its broke again. I think its time to get one of the newer models.
Does anyone have the New 2 speed DELTA. It looks like a superior Unit IMO.

I came this close --> . . <-- to getting it, but had to save some tool money for a jointer. I've read a half-dozen posts in various forums from people who have it and absolutely love it! Considering how smooth the finish is with their single-speed unit, the 2-speed on the slower speed must produce a great finish. The big advantage, of course, is on highly figured woods that tend to produce tear-out at higher feed speeds.

I am sure it is better for that, I just want to hear from somone who owns one.
I will likely go with the Delta...save your pennys..:o)
Ed,
I have the Delta 2 speed finish/planer, and would highly recommend it. I've run a little over 200 feet of maple and white oak through it in the short time I've owned it, and it hasn't missed a beat. It has a very accurate depth of cut gage, and a very convenient depth stop limiter. The Delta cutter head lock is about as snipe-free as a machine like this can get. This unit really does everything it says it can do.
The only problem I encountered, was when I was in the middle of a production run, and turned off the machine only to find that it wouldn't start again! I had shut the machine off quickly, and somehow cracked a minor piece of plastic off inside the switch mechanism. 36 hours later, Delta had rushed me a new switch (all under warranty), and I was back in business.
If you decide to buy the Delta (and you should), I highly recommend the optional dust hood, or you'll have shavings filling your shop like a Vermont snowfall!

THanks for the info Dan, I looked at the DEwalt , Delta 12-1/2 and Crapsman tonight plus the DElta 13"..
I can get the DElta 13" from amazon.com with FREE shipping, NO tax and FREE dust collector
I think I will go with it...:o)
Ed:
You might want to try Amazon's $100 off coupon: WWBUYANDSAVE
It's made for purchases $599 and higher, but it seems to work on purchases as low as $350. Give it a try, and if it works, send me a beer!

i already bought the delta 12-1/2 from amazon...i dont think that one will work under 599.
thanks anyway
Hi Ed, just did a webferret search and an Amazon search for WWBUYANDSAVE, no results. Can you give me more information?
I am planning to buy the 8" Powermatic jointer and an extra $100 would help.
Thanks, George
SEARCH WONT WORK...YOU APPLY THAT CODE WHEN YOU CHECKOUT TO BUY A TOOL OVER 599.00 TO GET 100.00 DISCOUNT....IT SHOULD WORK
Thanks Ed, I will give it a try.
When I was looking for an 8" jointer I got $100 off the price by asking-- at my local Powermatic dealer. Times are tight, and if you're there with cash in hand you can both get a better deal and do the right thing by a local business.

Good for you, BUT i also get free shipping AND no Tax...
for what I paid for a 12" planer they would never shave off $100.00
Yeah. Actually I got confused-- I had been reading about medium-sized jointers, then switched to smaller planers. I just had to give the plug for the little guy.
John
that 8" jointer sounds nice, but i only have a 1 bay garage area for a shop sooo... no room, I will settle on my 6" Jet (at least for the time being)
I have a 3 car garage maybe i should swap the 2 car space for a shop..:o)
I dunno about other states, but in WA, if you're using a tool for manufacturing, and you have a business license, you can fill out the tax exempt form and not pay sales tax.
Go for the local dealer if you can afford to! BTW, often if you clarify up front that you'll be paying with cash or a check (rather than debit or credit card) you can get some kind of perk -- be it a little $$ off, or an extra set of blades, whatever. My local guy will load up a pre-assembled tool, for instance (for a table saw, that's pretty nice -- no cosmoline! for one thing). That debit or credit card costs the merchant each time you use it, upwards of 2% - 2.5%.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Well Forest, I would love to claim ALL my wood tools as a business expense, but unless i am missing something here , It is only a hobby at this point. Maybe I should sell a few birdhouses and claim a business..I also realize some wanting to "support" your local dist.
Well if it was a differance of 5-10 bicks for a planer with tax locally i would do that but when i figured it out i saved almost $100.00 , Thats just for a 12"planer. I am not going to hand out that kind of money to the local machine company. NOBODY hands out money to me. I earn it everyday at work like everone else. Besides I still go to the same local place and by my hardwood, so they still make it from me.
Ed, not quite sure why you felt it necessary to give the big lecture (paragraph 2). If you read my post carefully you will see (emphasis added):
I was just throwing out a few tidbits of info, and I'm certainly not criticizing you for getting a good deal. I've benefited recently from two successful price-matching efforts at HD and Lowe's, and treasure every dime I saved (and done mini-gloats here at Knots re: same).forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
NOT critisizing you at all, just expressing MY opinion like you..NOw the expression "If you can Afford too" at what level does that come in? Maybe if I hit POWERBALL..:o)
