If you were willing to part with $1200.00 for a planer, would it be wiser to buy an older,12 to 14″ American or Canadian made machine, or buy a new 15″ Chinese made machine. I would appretiate all opinions.
Thanks,
John

John,
I've expressed my opinion on this matter before, and do so once again. In conscience I refuse to buy any product manufactured in the Peoples Republic of China; and in conscience I encourage others to do the same. The Chinese government has an atrocious record of human rights violations, no respect for the environment, and has yet to show a willingness to deal with other countries in a manner that is open, honest, or fair. (Hell, they can't even be honest about SARS.)
If you want to help strengthen such a government and in doing so contribute to its continued existence, then so be it.
One must also consider the number of American jobs lost when companies like Delta cease manufacturing machinery in this country and move those operations to China.
Granted, buying a used American or Canadian made machine does nothing to strengthen the North American economy, but doing so neither harms it nor contributes to the perpetuation of tyranny.

$1200 will buy alot of older USA iron if you take your time and look around. With the slow economy it's a buyers market. Recently seen Delta 18" wedge beds selling for that much. On tuesday a Cresent P24 goes on the auction block, might get that for $1200. A good condition Rockwell model 13 should be had for $800-$900. Take your time and look around, don't jump on the first one to pop up, unless it's a steal.

Might want to add the Makita 2040 planer to your look for list. I don't see em for sale often. Good planer, dead nutz reliable, leaves a nice finish.
I bought a Grizzley G1033 a twenty inch wide planer..
I've run tens of thousands of bd.ft. through it without a hick-up. It works nice and is butt simple to adjust ..
Regarding China and it's politics..
the surest way to change someone is to involve them in reasons to change.. We haven't changed Cuba at all in the 40 plus years since we started the embargo.
However China has come a very long way since Nixon first visted it..
While it's not where we want it today it will only get there when it's in China's interest to do so..
besides I believe that Grizzley is made in Tiawan..

Yes, and if you want to stick it to China, buy Taiwanese. They do not get along at all. If it were not for the USA Navy, China would have annexed it by now.
well this discusion belongs elsewhere, however technically it is China, the Chineese think it's part of China and the Tiwaineese can't wait untill they can take back the mainland..
