Hi everybody. I am new to this discussion and I am wanting to make a planer stand for a new dewalt planer. I was wondering if any of you have made these before and have some good ideas of dos and donts. Sorry if this has already been discussed recently I am still getting the hang of things and am excited to share and learn.

Hi Jonas,
Welcome to the forum. I'm looking to do the same thing. The best planer station that I've come across is the one published in ShopNotes Issue 75 (see pic below). They refer to it as a "Dual Tool Station", suitable for use with a miter saw AND lunchbox planer. I haven't built it yet, but I intend to in the future. Unfortunately, I don't see it on their list of back issues available for sale on their website. Maybe you can post a request here or on http://www.forums.woodnet.net to see if someone is willing to sell a back copy or contact ShopNotes directly to see if they have the plans. -- Good luck!
p.s. I hope I didn't violate any ground rules on this site by advertising for the competition. If it makes a difference, I subscribe to BOTH publications.

There are lots of ways to skin this particular cat, but here are a few general suggestions:
1) Make it high enough so you don't have to bend over to start the boards through, and then remove them on the other side. For me, that means a stand where the planer bed will be about 34" from the floor. Lower than this, my back starts to hurt when I am going through a big stack of boards.
2) Put the stand on casters, unless your shop is big enough so the planer can be permanently positioned with adequate clearance on the front and back.
3) The width of the stand only needs to be enough to accomodate the planer, but make it long enough (front to back) so it's not tippy when you're at the end of a board.
4) Consider making the stand in the form of a box; with doors or drawers, the box can become an additional source of storage.

Jonas,
Just bought the same planer, just finished my stand, I'll try to take some picks so that you can see it. I basically built it like a mini workbench, heavy 3X3 legs and all 2X3 rails. It's just the right size for the planer and I'm going to make some folding infeed and outfeed rollers. When I have it done I'll post the pics.
