Planing board while protecting one side
I want to plane a long-leaf pine board on my floor planer. The problem I have is planing it while protecting one side which is very distressed. Sounds easy. Just plane it on the other side. However, I think my planer ‘grippers'(or whatever they’re called) will scratch and cause unwanted marks on the distressed side. I guess I could fasten a thin piece of wood to the underside, the distressed side, and feed it through that way. Any other ideas that may be better would be appreciated. Thanks.

Use a melamine cheater board that is fastened to the infeed and outfeed tables, or a carrying sled (basically a flat piece of whatever with a small cleat to keep the piece from being pushed off by the feed rollers). Keep in mind that by planning only on one side, you increase the chance of a bow.
1/4" plywood and some carpet tape. If the tape is too tacky put it on your jeans before you put it on the distressed lumber so it won't pull patches off. Mrossk's advice on not removing too much is sound.
