Hello
I recently got a bunch of Hickory about 1 3/8 thick.
Where as I only have a portable planer I thought I would slice it down to some size on the band saw. I do have a use for the thin stock left over. I would like to know how to safely plane it. Some where I once read about using a “planer sled”.
Any help would be appreciated

A sled should work with a planer my planer will take the wood down to 1/8 inch. I use a sled all the time to make my own veneer with a wide belt sander. A piece of 3/4 particle board with a thin stop glued on one end works well.

Jim- A "sled" for the planer is simply a piece of particle board/ mdf or (best) melemine, that is longer than the bed of the planer and the full width of the planer bed. It has a cleat on the bottom which butts up to the base of the planer so that it does not move when the planer is turned on. Basically you set the depth of cut on the planer to a little less than the thickness of the stock to be planed- plus the thickness of the sled. To use it you simply put your thin stock through on top of the sled surface. The sled is giving plenty of support under the thin stock so you can plane stock down to an 1/8" or less. I have gone as far as 1/16" in cherry- Be very careful to read the grain correctly. A little furniture paste wax on the sled surface is a help. The thinner you go the more wood you will lose to tearout. Frequently the first few inches will get ripped up by the planner when it is very thin- so plan on milling extra!
