Hi,
I’m about to start building a “newfangled” bench but have suddenly found that I don’t understand how to plane thinner stock than 3/4″ using the tail vises. Am I supposed to raise the stock by putting “shims” under it or have I missed something important?
Kind regards,
Ake

Actually, using shims is exactly what I did. I have several strips of 1/4" thick plywood, 3" by 12" that I keep by the bench for that purpose. Using the shims isn't the most elegant design but it kept the bench simple. It would be possible to redesign the bench so that the end piece near the clamp handles and the sliding block have dogs that could be adjusted for height but I haven't had the time, or the financial incentive to redesign and build a new bench, but I'm still hoping to build a second generation version of it for a new shop I'm moving into this summer.
