This weekend I was planning 4/4 teak on my 15″ Jet planner. As the boards hit the knives the hand wheel would spin and decrease the depth of cut. I tightened the locking hand wheels as tight as possible and tried again with the same results. I then took apart the locking assembly that locks against the four column posts. I clean all of the surfaces that were in contact, but still had the same problem. I’ve never really had this happened with other species of wood cherry, walnut or oak. Is there something I’m missing or is it the species of wood?
Thanks,
Aaron

I would call Jet about this: 1-800-274-6846, make sure you get tech support and not sales.
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I had this happen with a powermatic 15" and I made a wooden wedge to fit between the handle and the machine casting. Sometimes the wood is just a bit harder, and the knives a bit too dull,so the handle just starts moving. Once I put in the wedge though it stopped wandering.

ABENKER,
Had that happen to me with my 15" planer. The knives were blunt! I have heard about other causes of this but have not experienced. By all means call Jet!
Good luck!
Mack
If you've never planed teak before you are experiencing the effect of dull knives I suspect. Change your knives and all should be fine.
Had this happen on a 15 Delta at a shop I used to work at. Dull Knives. Changed the knives and the problem went away.
Thanks for the advice. I had better flip over the dispoza blades and try again.
While you're at it, you'd better go ahead and order some new blades...
Teak has such a high silica content that it dulls blades like nothing else.
I prefer to thckness sand it if at all possible...
