Treefrog,
You asked for ideas...I made one that attaches to the inside of the cabinet door. Its got three shelves with guard rails that holds the bottles in place and it wraps around the shelf in the cabinet. It has no back (cabinet door is the back)so that depth is minimized . Quite handy while cooking

As a cook as well as woodworker, I would like to add that spices have a shelf life. for ground spices - 6months and for whole - 1yr. That is under good conditions - dark and coolish - you want to keep spices out of the sun and away from heat or they will degrade rapidly.
I like to use the little magnetic metal canisters and put a piece of sheet metal on the inside of my cabinet doors and then the spices will stick to that. Others I know use the Alton Brown trick of using vecro on the inside of cabinet doors and on the bottom the cannisters
For the velcro soltion, you can use these:

Or use them and get some flexible magnet strips and glue them to the bottom and use them on sheetmetal flashing.
1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
