Plans for Antique Knife Box repro?
I’m looking to build a repro of the old colonial knife boxes you see in restored homes. They’re about 15″ tall of carved wood, made to hold the precious silverware vertically. Like these:
Has anyone ever seen plans for such a box, or know the technique for shaping the front of the box?

Kent,
The front of the box needs to be shaped from one solid piece of wood. The sides are usually mitered. Here is a nice example:
Beautiful example. So have you any ideas on how to shape the box other than hand carving? It's too tall to fit in a bandsaw. (My hand carving skills aren't up to this.)

Molding planes.Cliff
Kent,
If hand carving is not an option then the moulding planes will be your next best bet. Sorry I don't have more info for you. A pair of these boxes is on the "want to do" list for the future for me.

Lee,
That would take a big moulding plane for that profile, so I guess several planes would be needed. But since the box is veneered, I could build the front up of multiple 1-inch layers stacked one on the other, the individual pieces being small enough to shape with a bandsaw. The veneer would hide this.Mike Holden pointed out to me on General Discussion that the boxes in your JPG were built by Steve Lash, founder of SAPFM, and I found there's an article on how he made them in American Period Furniture. I've ordered that back issue, and if I ever build one I'll post it here.Kent
