Last summer I helped my son’s Cub Scout pack with building a Cub Mobile (a simple version of the soapbox derby) and they won-that’s the good news.
The bad news is that they now want me to build a trophy case to hold the winning trophies.
HELP!
Would appreciate any thoughts and suggestions. (Size might be 6 ft long, 3 ft high 18” deep??? – Suspended on the wall-no base)
I also have a couple of questions:
#1. Has anyone ever seen any plans for a trophy case?
#2. Where could get the hardware (like the upper & lower slides for the glass…) ?
#3. What type of glass should I use??? (or plastic since there will be lots a kids around it??)
#4. Solid wood or plywood (MDF…)?
#5. Any other thought or suggestions?
Thanks for your help!
Regards,

J,
1. I don't ever remember seeing plans for a trophy case. Anyway that's the fun part--designing your own. You might get ideas from visiting local schools that have sports teams; most usually have a lobby with some type or trophy display. On a case that wide, you might consider putting in a vertical partition midway with predrilled shelf support holes for future use of shelves. This shorter span would help prevent a shelf from sagging.
2. Woodworker's Hardware carries the glass door track. (www.wwhardware.com)
3. If the case will be installed at floor level, I would definitely use plexiglass or tempered glass. If at upper level, double strength glass should be ok. Remember to check with a glass shop before finalizing your plans, to see if glass with recessed finger pulls for the sliding doors is available.
4. That's your choice. For economy in time and expense of materials, I would choose hardwood plywood for the carcass, solid hardwood for the faceframe (if you're using one).
Good luck. GP
