I am looking to start plantation shutters, and was wondering if anyone could give me an idea on where I could find a good how to site on the web. I have never built shutters, so I am looking for a little direction.
I am also looing at purchasing a CMT router table. does anyone have anything to say about this piece of equipment.
Thanks

I seen Norm building some a month or so ago. I think you can buy the how- to tape from the show.
Check out Yankee workshop.com, dont know the site name.

Years ago there was a Woodright show or This Old House Show on Shutters, The Mill was Water Powered, All period belt driven machines. You may find it very interesting if you can find it. Believe the Mill was in the NE USA. Oh to have a shop like that.
Remember, To be put up properly, shutters have to look like they're put up wrong ! When closed they should lapdown like siding, When open they are just the opposite, unless you make them louverable.Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

THE SHUTTER PLANT IS IN OSSIPEE NH, VISITED IT LAST SUMMER,GREAT OLD MILL, BEEN IN BUSINESS SINCE 1857. HAVE HIS NAME IN MY HOME COMPUTER WILL POST IT MONDAY
Hi,
Plantation Shutters were on my 'honey do' list after moving to North Carolina. So far I have built 10 really large (30 x 72) shutters for LOML.
Rocker sells a plan and the shutter pins. I bought the Rocker shutter pins because I could not find nylon 'tension' pins available anywhere in quanity, as it turned out wound up not needing to use the tension pins. Woodworkers Supply does sell the nylon pins in quanity (1000) if you are interested, price is much better than Rockers.
As another poster mentioned Norm (New Yankee Workshop) did build some plantation shutter recently, might want to check out the New Yankee website.
I built mine from Poplar used pin'ed mortise and tendon joints and painted them white. Easily the most boring, tedious creatures you will ever build.
Good luck
tj,
A lot of shutters installed today are strictly for decoration; never used.
There is nothing worse than a 5 foot picture window flanked by a couple of 16 inch plastic shutters.
When closed the shutters should completely block the opening; also they should be installed to pick up the prevailing wind; make allowance if you plan on offset hinges.
I also saw Norm making shutters; he made a template I think for routing out all those slots for the louvers.
Lots of shutters here in the tropics; work like a charm.
Sounds like a fun project.
