I need to dip wood sub-assemblies of 4′ benches, chairs, side tables, footstools into stain.
Where can I buy a plastic trough?? (mail-order, used, retail or trades store, whatever). Planning to drip off/backwipe before drying. Trough should be 4′ long, 2.5′ wide, 6″ deep to accommodate sub-assemby sizes.
Incidentally, is this the best way to stain quickly? Have to stain underside of product as well. Have tried hand-wiping and hand-brushing – too lmuch time and can’t get good coverage (eg: 1 chair has 16 1″x1″x22″ slats. We’re using semi-transparent, oil-based stain on premium cedar. I’m not questioning the selection of stain, wood, or combination thereof. Just the method.
Thanx all.

Can you make one using 2x6's and heavy plastic tarp? You can get heavy plastic for fish ponds at Lowe's or HD. Can use staples around the top.

How about a child's swimming pool? You can get them for next to nothing and the come in rigid plastic. as well as the inflatable kind.
I'd be pretty nervous about using plastic sheeting, as suggested above. If anything went wrong and ripped the plastic, it'd be a serious mess!
Why do you specifically want a plastic trough? How 'bout a large aluminum watering trough? They're not as light as plastic, but they're not impossible either. Relatively affordable, and water-tight.
Fish pond liner is like 20 mils thick.

Make a wood box ( plywood, etc) line with shower pan liner stuff is thick and tough. Do the corners just like making a bed. Should work great. Don't forget to make a lid too.
Based on my exprerience you should be spraying on the stain not dipping. Waste of time, material, rags and stain not to mention a huge potential mess. Contact your finishing supplier to put the burden on them to achieve a solution to your problem.
if youre hell bent on dipping look at a farm/feed store Horse troughs can be found in plastic or you could get a metal and create a plastic liner.
Just make sure the solvents in the stain dont eat the plastic....
